If your fans with PWM are plugged into a three-pin connector, the fans will work, but you won’t be able to control them. There are also 5.25" fan controllers with nobs on them or a touchscreen but I hear you can't set fan curves on them and you have to keep turning the nobs to increase fan speed which is hard because my case has a door to cover the 5.25" bays and I have to keep opening it. You can only use the PWM function i.e., controlling your fan if your motherboard has a four-pin connector. I looked at pwm fan hubs but they all seem to run the fans at 100% speed because they don't plug into the motherboard and are only plugged into power. The standard is now PWM, which stands for Pulse Width Modulation. I at first thought of getting a splitter to split the cpu 4 pin but that would mean 4 fans would be connected to it (cpu fan and 3 case fans) and I don't want to overload the 4 pin header as I heard daisy chaining too many fans to one header can damage the header. In order to make use of a fan with PWM, your motherboard needs a PWM. The PWM signal from the motherboard sources 5V during the on state of the pulse, otherwise its pulled to ground. I plan on building a pc with an asus p6t x58 motherboard and a xeon x5675 (These cpus are awesome they are like $25 and can handle a 2070 super/1080 ti) The only issue is that all the fan headers except the cpu fan header are 3 pin only. PWM Fans or 4-Pin Fans Pulse width modulation (PWM) fans are DC fans with an extra.
